School and Classroom Policies
Attendance
Absence
Attendance is very important to student success. Please schedule all doctor's appointments after school. If your child is absent, please send a written note with your child when he/she returns or e-mail me the note.
Tardy
Please send a note explaining the reason for your child’s tardiness with your child. The school day promptly begins at 8:00am with “Fairburn in Motion.” Three 20-minute tardies constitute an absence according to California State Law.
Leaving Early
If you are signing your child out early for any reason, a blue slip needs to be filled out in the office. The office will call for your child to come to the office. Therefore, the classroom will have minimal disruption. It is recorded as a tardy.
Administering Medicine
Medicine can only be administered by our school staff with a note from your child’s pediatrician. Please do not send medicine to school for your child to take at lunch on their own. This includes cough drops.
Classroom Parties
Fairburn’s school party policy allows for two parties per school year, not to exceed 30 minutes in length. We will have one the week before winter break, and the other one will be at the end of the year. All parents are invited.
Birthdays
Please let me know at least a couple days before if you would like to bring in treats to celebrate your child’s birthday. As per LAUSD policy, all food must be store bought. You can drop off the treats the morning of, and we will celebrate at the beginning of their recess time. All treats should be easy to distribute.
Grading
Your child’s report card grade are determined by their mastery of the second grade skills and standards and the amount of effort they put into their work.
Bathroom
There is an expectation that students use the restroom before school, recess, lunch, and/or afterschool. Many times, bathroom breaks cause a disruption to instruction. I understand that the use of the restroom can be a sensitive issue and am willing to work with you to make sure we maximize your child's learning. At the beginning of the year, I understand students are adjusting to being in school, and I expect restroom use to be more frequent. Also, if there is a medical condition that causes a student to use the restroom more frequently than others, please write me a note so that I am aware.
Behavior
Positive behavior deserves a reward! In addition to daily verbal praise, each student has a stamp card for the month where they can earn a stamp daily for good behavior. At the end of four weeks, students will earn a small prize from the treasure chest.
In addition, table points are given daily. At the end of the week, the winning table gets a small treat.
Homework
It is designed for two purposes:
to reinforce skills learned at school, and to develop a sense of responsibility. Please
review and check your child’s homework before they turn it in. If you have a question
about the homework, please attach a note to it. A blue folder has been provided for
the student to take homework home, and return it to school. It will be under the Homework Tab on this website.
